In this newsletter, we’ll take a look back at several key points in Charlotte’s LGBT history. Meanwhile, so-called “don’t say gay” bills like in Florida, battles over LGBT-themed books with sexually explicit passages such as "Gender Queer" and the place of trans athletes in sports have dominated the headlines for months. Such an amazing resource for local folx to access services in a safe, accepting, and supportive environment.
We’re looking for incredible people to join our team and want to build a career with CATS.
The North Carolina General Assembly last week overrode Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of a trio of bills. One bans puberty blockers, gender surgery and other transition-related health care for minors. One forbids transgender women and girls from playing on female sports teams from middle school through college. And one requires schools to notify parents if their child wants to start using a different name or pronoun.
That meant transgender women could use the women’s room in most public buildings (transgender men could use the men’s room, but that occasioned much less controversy). After Charlotte’s vote, state legislators in Raleigh quickly passed a new bill overturning the ordinance and forbidding other North Carolina cities from passing their own. Six months after the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage, Charlotte City Council’s decision to add sexual orientation and gender identity to its local nondiscrimination ordinance seemed like it might not be too controversial. After all, the biggest question in gay rights had just been decided by the highest court in the land.

For some, the process will be easy, while for others, it might take some time. As a trans woman, I felt pretty safe here during my visit—way less sketchy stuff than in other places I’ve been. Making friends might be a bit tricky at first, but it gets easier, especially if you hit up bars and join meetups. The crowd is mixed and often has trans men and women but usually everyone leans towards their thirties and up.

I’ve personally had success using OkCupid and have found my fair share of dates there and also made some great connections with other trans people. Charlotte Trans Health is a collective of multidisciplinary healthcare providers committed to gender affirming care through education, community outreach, consultation, and provision of services to the community. Through collaboration, peer education, and consultation, our members strive to increase access to care through enhanced trans-specialized clinical competency of individual healthcare providers and larger systems of care. Education on gender affirming care ranges from limited to non-existent in most clinical programs, thus our providers fill this gap to increase resources and reduce disparities in the Charlotte area. Providers on this list have previously confirmed that they provide trans-affirming care.

At night, the city offers incredible nightlife with plenty of LGBT+ friendly venues. There’s really a lot to do and you can also attend drag brunches. Of course, it has a lot of fetishists and chasers but don’t let that deter you because it’s a huge app so you’re bound to also find positive experiences.
